50 Years of Bosch Manufacturing in Australia
The year 2004 marks the 50th anniversary of the Bosch automotive manufacturing operation in Australia. It is also now round a century ago that Bosch products were first imported into this country. During the early years the products were directly imported via a variety of channels. It is history that Pyrox Pty Ltd succeeded in their pursuit of the Bosch Agency and founded Robert Bosch Supply & Service Co in 1922 with premises in Flinders Street, Melbourne.

A joint venture between Robert Bosch GmbH and Pyrox was established 50 years ago. Driving the investment was the contract awarded to Pyrox by General Motors- Holden’s in 1952 for the supply of electrical sets comprising starter motors, generators, distributors and coils for the now legendary FJ Holden.  The FJ launched in 1953 was only GM-H’s second model. Five years earlier, Prime Minister Ben Chifley had presided over the launch of Australia’s first locally produced car, the Holden FX.

In September 1954 the construction of a factory began on the current Bosch site in Clayton.
During the past five decades Bosch has grown into a major force in the Australian automotive industry.  The company has been built by a dedicated and innovative workforce always striving to overcome the tyranny of distance.  It has been supported by loyal customers, suppliers, governments and, of course, the Bosch Group.
To them all we are sincerely grateful.

Today, Robert Bosch Australia is no longer a local company manufacturing automotive components only for Australian customers.  It is truly an integrated member of the Bosch global network supplying overseas customers in Europe, Asia and America.
